It includes a strong steel cable with hooks or attachment ends that is mounted on a brake actuator.
One end connects to a fixed point on the towing vehicle (not the chains), and the other to the brake actuator’s breakaway lever or pin.
If the trailer separates from the tow vehicle while moving, the cable is pulled taught and activates the actuator’s emergency lever. This engagement pushes hydraulic fluid into the trailer’s brakes, applying them to stop the trailer and prevent a runaway situation.
Why it’s important
It’s a critical safety feature required (in many jurisdictions) on trailers with surge brake systems to reduce risk of accidents if hitch failure occurs.
Without a functioning safety/breakaway cable, the trailer may not automatically apply brakes when disconnected, increasing hazard to people and property.
