A Break Away Switch (VLED) is a safety device commonly used in trailers with electric brakes (like RVs, utility trailers, or horse trailers). Its purpose is to automatically activate the trailer’s brakes if it becomes disconnected from the towing vehicle.
How it works
- The switch is mounted on the trailer and connected to the tow vehicle with a cable or lanyard.
- If the trailer separates from the hitch, the cable pulls a pin out of the switch.
- Once the pin is pulled:
- The switch completes an electrical circuit.
- Power from the trailer’s onboard battery is sent to the electric brakes.
- The brakes engage immediately to stop the trailer independently.
What “VLED” refers to
“VLED” typically indicates that the breakaway switch includes a Voltage LED indicator. This LED provides a quick visual check of the system’s status:
- Green (or solid light): Battery and system are OK.
- Red or no light: Low battery or a fault in the breakaway system.
- Some models may blink or change color to indicate specific issues.
Why it’s important
- Prevents a runaway trailer, reducing the risk of accidents or damage.
- Often required by law for trailers with electric braking systems.
- Helps ensure the trailer stops even if the main electrical connection fails.
